Discovery Green is made up of spacious green lawns, a one-acre lake, children’s playground, interactive water features, restaurants, an amphitheater and more. Designed to attract people of all ages from all over the Houston area, accommodating the influx of people became a large concern for the developer and the City of Houston.
In order to provide additional parking and preserve green space, the City of Houston decided to transform the existing parking deck into a three-story, below-grade parking garage with the lid of the garage transformed into a lush field of green landscape.
Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing was hired to waterproof the parking garage, an interactive water fountain and a planter on the roof of The Grove restaurant. The original specification called for a hot, fluid-applied waterproofing membrane for each of these applications. Adhering to installation schedules was critical to the City of Houston so that the park could be opened in early spring 2008, as promised.
Traditional hot, fluid-applied coatings require fully cured and dry concrete and a wait of two to four weeks. Chamberlin knew they could get the job done faster by switching the spec to TREMproof 250GC Cold, Fluid-Applied Waterproofing Membrane.
Tremco’s TREMproof 250GC was developed with a new polymeric system that allows excellent adhesion to wet and damp concrete while preventing the excess moisture from evaporating out of the fresh concrete too quickly. The coating cures in just four hours while allowing the concrete to cure to a higher quality material.
Where the hot, fluid-applied membrane would have taken at least 24 days to install over a 60,000-square-foot surface, TREMproof 250GC allowed the job to be completed in record time, within 7-10 days, keeping the project on schedule and saving the City of Houstona significant amount of money in the end.
